CASE STUDY

Starr

Starr's Story

Starr was part of the Community Alternatives DofE group which is part of North Lanarkshire Council Social Work. Starr is currently in a Kinship Care placement because her parents passed away when she was young. She’s faced big challenges in life, but DofE is helping her to learn that as long as she makes a start on a goal, there’s a possibility she can achieve it.

Her Volunteering section in particular made a real impact on her. She volunteered at a local food bank and said that “It was good to get out and be a part of something like that. I like helping people. If I saw a homeless person in the street I’d give him my last pound. At the food bank I got to help people who didn’t have anything.”

“Doing my DofE showed me I can finish things I didn’t know I could. We did teambuilding activities. I know now that there’s stuff I think I can’t do, but I’ll give it a go before I give up. I know that starting something is important even if you’re not sure you can finish. It means you’ve done something if you start. I didn’t think like that before doing my DofE. I’m hoping that I can do my Silver DofE next because I learnt stuff and made new friends.”

Starr was supported through her DofE by another inspiring woman, Jennifer Lafferty. Jennifer supported the 10 young people in Starr’s group through their Bronze DofE as their DofE Leader. Everyone in the group was referred because they had additional needs, or needed social work support. Jennifer said “It was so rewarding to see the difference doing DofE made in them. They are so much more confident now that they’ve tried new things through doing their DofE.”

I know that starting something is important even if you’re not sure you can finish. It means you’ve done something if you start.

Outcome

The group dealt with so many difficult situations, some of the participants were turned out of their family homes, some like Starr had lost their parents. They really came together to support each other and stay motivated to complete.”
